[TRIBUTE] Katie McGrath

On Monday 24 October 1983, Katherine Elizabeth McGrath was welcomed into the world by her mother Mary, trained cook and fashion assistant, father Paul, works in IT, and two older brothers, Rory and Sean. Though born in Dublin, her childhood years were spent in Ashford, Wicklow, Ireland, a small village holding just over 1,000 people.

Katie studied the International Baccalaureate program at St. Andrew's College in Blackrock, Dublin, with extracurriculars activities drama and debating, before graduating in History at Trinity College.« I wasn't the biggest fan of college because I was so desperate to get started on life. I went for four
years but I never really physically went. I'd turn up to hand in my essays but that was about it. »

After graduating, Katie got a job as a fashion journalist at Image, an Irish fashion and lifestyle magazine. With a diminishing interest in fashion she quit the job after 8 months. Through her mother's contacts, she was hired as a wardrobe assistant under Joan Bergin on the set of The Tudors.« It was feet-first, in at the deep end and trying to swim. And it turned out to be great fun. It was one of the best jobs I ever had. They're all amazing people and I was working under Joan Bergin who's possibly one of the best costume designers in the world. It was fantastic but I didn't really know what I was doing. I was just floating along, being myself. »

TAKING OFF
As a wardrobe girl, Katie spent most of her time on set way behind the scenes. In 2007, she began
gaining attention from the crew and got the part of a background extra in the show's promotional
merchandise. After being advised to give acting a try she sent her headshot combined with "a really dodgy letter" to all the agents in Ireland. Within three months, she was cast as Rachel in an Irish TV
movie entitled Damage. Later that year, Katie starred in Bedrock Productions' play La Marea at the Dublin Theatre Festival 2007. To date, this is Katie's only theatre production, not counting playing the lead in school play Daisy Pulls it Off.

In 2008, Katie went back to her TV roots as she landed the role of Bess, a mistress of William Webbe's, in an episode of The Tudors. Shortly after she was cast in Irish sit-com The Roaring Twenties, drama film Eden and horror flick Freakdog. Her Freakdog character Harriet marked her first lead role.

.MERLIN
.In January 2008, Katie had her first read-through for the role of Morgana Pendragon, the opinionated .first lady of Camelot, one of the leads in BBC's next promising family show about the teenage lives of the .characters in the Arthurian legend.
.However, her agent phoned her up shortly after the read-through concerning a problem with potential .co-star Colin Morgan:

.« My agent rang at one point and said, 'There's a slight problem... they're looking at another actor who's
.also Irish.' They were talking about Colin [Morgan, who plays Merlin]. They didn't want two Irish .accents in it, and she rang me back and said, 'Okay. Colin's in London, so he's going to come in and .read.it in an English accent, but if he can't do it, then I'm afraid you have .tocome over and nail it in an .English accent. Otherwise they can't use you. So I spent the whole weekend fretting about it. 'Did he do .it? Did he do it?' When I got the call on Monday to say, 'Yup his accent's fine', I was so relieved. My English accent is actually okay, but I couldn't handle the pressure of having to do the audition again. »

Filming for Merlin began in Cardiff, Wales in March the same year. Filming continued both in studio and on locations such as Puzzlewood, Raglan Castle and Château de Pierrefonds in France for another 8 months.
The show was broadcast in the fall, premiering in September, with an average of 6 million viewers each week. U.S. broadcasting rights were purchased by NBC making Merlin the first British drama in over thirty years to be shown on US network television. In December, despite mixed reviews, the BBC re-commissioned the show for a second season.

The show's second season premiered in the UK September 19, 2009. The show was becoming increasingly popular with children and families and, perhaps a bit unexpectedly, with teens and young adults. The show had now been purchased to broadcast in 183 countries and comparisons to BBC's popular Doctor Who were made.

PLAYING PRINCESSES
Between Merlin's second and third season, Katie began looking for new roles to play. Her first project
after beginning Merlin was Channel 4's docu-drama entitled The Queen. Starring opposite her Merlin co-star Emilia Fox, she played Emilia's character's sister for the second time, this time Princess Margaret. Katie portrays the princess during a difficult time of her life: after her father's death she decides weather
or not following her heart and marrying divorced war hero Peter Townsend is the right move for the future of the crown and for herself.

« [Princess Margaret is] another princess, but she’s completely different. It was nice to play something different that was so far from what it is that I do on Merlin, so that I can really appreciate when I come back. »

Merlin's third season premiered September 11, 2010. This season explored Morgana's relationship with Morgause and her views on magic more so than the previous two seasons. The show got re-commissioned for yet another season in October, before the season had even finished its third season broadcast.

« I haven't played the same character from year to year [...] [Morgana] was a spoilt, stroppy princess at the start. She's an unsure, fearful girl in the second [series]. She's on both sides in the third… »

WORKING WITH MADONNA & MERLIN SEASON 4
In 2010, Katie was cast in Madonna's directorial debut W.E.. Katie praised Madonna saying she was 'fantastic'. In this King Edward VIII biopic, Katie played King Edward's former mistress Lady Thelma Furness, the one responsible for introducing him to the love of his life, Wallis Simpson.
Katie worked with another singer-gone-director on A Princess for Christmas, starring along side former James Bond, Roger Moore. Katie plays Jules Daly, a stressed guardian who travels with her niece and nephew to Castlebury Hall at the invitation of an estranged relative. The comedy-drama and W.E. both premiered in December 2011.

Officially a baddie and loving it in Merlin's fourth season, Morgana is running on anger trying to defeat Camelot. She's seeing a future featuring someone named Emrys whom she tries desperately to stop.

« It feels like for three of the seasons she was kind of playing a role [...] finally when you get to season three and you start to see her playing both sides, for me, as an actor, I really feel like when I play the darker side of her that it's really actually playing who she is, she doesn't have to hide anymore [...] so weather you say evil, I just think it's the real her »

Katie is currently filming Merlin's fifth series and another season (and movie) is in talks. With another two projects, animated short Tríd an Stoirm and adventure-thriller tv-seriesLabyrinth, expected to come out 2012, Katie is just as busy and at it as ever.
